An ‘egg’ sandwich…

TWO Galashiels-based entrepreneurs took centre stage at a landmark business event held at Schloss Roxburghe.

Egg, the fast-growing platform for women in business, brought its signature energy to the region for the very first time.

The Women on Top event, hosted in partnership with Claire Drynan of Spark Dot Grow, welcomed more than 50 women for a morning of honest conversation and practical advice.

The gathering, held at the five-star venue near Kelso, focused on the realities of running and growing a business, particularly in rural and regional areas.

Claire, who launched Spark Dot Grow in 2023 after leaving her corporate role, said: “When the opportunity came up to bring Egg’s Women on Top event to the Scottish Borders, I knew I had to make it happen, even with just two weeks to pull it together.

“The response was fantastic. It really showed there’s a genuine appetite for empowering business events and making meaningful connections in our region.”

Emily McGowan, of McGowan Marketing, and Lauren Jamieson, of The Colourful Edit, shared their experiences of starting and scaling businesses in Galashiels.

Lauren said: “It was wonderful to see so many familiar faces connecting for the first time as there’s such untapped potential here.

“The Scottish Borders is a special place, full of remarkable businesses, and I felt proud to represent Galashiels, especially in my 10th year.”

Emily added: “Starting and scaling a business takes resilience and tenacity. But it’s all the more rewarding when you’re surrounded by a community that genuinely wants to see you succeed.

“Events like this remind us that there’s enough room at the table for everyone.

“When we lift each other up, we all rise together.”

The event forms part of Egg’s wider mission to support women in business, following the January 2025 launch of its business club and online hub, The Lounge.

Founder Kylie Reid said: “We chose to come to the Borders and to Schloss Roxburghe because we know how many brilliant women are building businesses here, often without the support or recognition they deserve.

“This event was about visibility, connection and starting something that we hope will grow roots in this region. We’ll definitely be back”

I was asked to be a guest speaker at ‘egg’s’ first Scottish Borders event, hosted at the Schloss Roxburghe in the beautiful Scottish Borders.

Here’s a snapshot from our recent press release, featured in the Southern Reporter, supplied by the lovely Emily McGowan.

And here is my prep work in the lead up to the event….
Some insights you may not have heard before! With my take on The Colourful Edit and life in general.

Q: Can you tell us about your career journey – how did you get to where you are today?

I didn’t have a clear path after school. While most of my friends went to university, I threw myself into work—learning industries from the inside out, connecting with people, saying yes to opportunities, and getting promoted quickly. I travelled to see friends, asked questions constantly, and soaked it all up.

Looking back, I probably would’ve studied branding and photography, two things I adored, without knowing they could be careers. I was obsessed with movement, seasons, and fashion, and spent hours watching Fashion TV and flicking through Vogue. But no one was talking about creative careers where I lived. It just wasn’t on the radar.

At 21, I moved to the other side of the world in search of adventure and purpose. Ten years later, I came home with a dual passport, a husband, a starter business, a baby on my hip, and another on the way. I now have three!

In New Zealand, I managed a restaurant where I built a rapport with a regular group, including Simon, a commercial photographer. That connection led to a role as his assistant, and I spent two years working on campaigns for brands like Nestlé, Coca-Cola, Bendon underwear, and Ford. That job opened up my world. I zipped around on my scooter, flew across the country, and soaked up the creative energy.

From there, I landed in Australia and joined a fast-paced advertising agency, where I quickly moved into a project management role. But I was drawn to the creative side, and ended up leading the Creative Services team. It was the golden era of craft—TV, radio, print—and the buzz was electric. We’d send the creatives into a beanbag room for a two-hour brief and find them eight hours later with magic in their hands.

At the same time, I was helping friends style outfits for events, and colour had become a huge part of how I expressed myself. I trained as a personal stylist and launched Scotch & Rose Style, my first solo business.

When I returned to the UK, I wanted to create something that brought together all my skills—styling, branding, creativity, and storytelling. I started with a mantra: “Editing life with a splash of colour.” Then it hit me—The Colourful Edit. I couldn’t believe no one had taken it.

That was ten years ago.

Since then, I’ve styled clients, branded small businesses, and, during maternity leave, accidentally launched a sustainable accessories line after breaking my favourite necklace. One colourful piece led to another, and before I knew it, I was in retail and wholesale—selling thousands of pieces, featuring on Trinny’s Elevator Pitch, raising funds for the NHS, and showcasing at Top Drawer, where I even met Holly Tucker.

Today, I’m back to my roots in personal styling and small business consulting, working independently so I can create my own schedule. I’ve launched the colourful edit collectives. I’m also an ambassador for Jigsaw and involved in a number of community projects that keep me grounded and connected. The Heartland Market, the Galashiels BID as a Board Director, Kelso Races and working with Heriot-Watt University.

Q: What’s been the biggest challenge you’ve faced so far, and your proudest win?

You’d think I might say Covid, but actually, my business adapted well during that time. My biggest professional challenge came during Top Drawer. I invested so much—financially, emotionally, creatively—to take my product range wholesale. It was all set to fly. Then, the Queen passed away. The world paused, and so did the buzz.

Personally? Losing my best friend. That stopped me in my tracks. She was my biggest cheerleader. When she passed, I lost a bit of my colour too. It’s been one of the hardest chapters of my life.

My proudest win? It’s when my kids look at me and say, “Mummy, are you famous?” or “Just tell people to be themselves.” That reminds me why I do what I do. To build something joyful and authentic—and to show them you can live a life that’s yours.

Q: What one piece of advice would you give to someone just starting out in business or in your industry?

You need passion, but passion alone isn’t enough. You need a strong brand. You’ve got to graft. You’ve got to show up, even when it’s not glamorous. This industry asks you to be creative, but also effective. To miss out on things. To understand people, not just trends.

Break a few rules. Have integrity. Do the work when no one’s watching. And whatever you do, build community. Community is everything. It’s where the magic happens, and it’s what gives your work meaning.

Q: Is there a key moment or lesson that shaped your journey?

Yes. Realising that my superpower is being a cheerleader. For clients, collaborators, and even strangers. Helping people rediscover their spark through creativity—that’s what drives me.

My client’s feedback. Sparkly eyes.

Also, I believe in the power of human connection and manifestation. You need vision. But you also need to believe you’re allowed to have the life you imagine. And then, you build it.

Q: What’s your top tip for getting noticed and standing out in business today?

Wear colour. Be kind. Leave an impression.

And most importantly, be yourself. Don’t worry about the crowd. I’ve never been a crowd-pleaser. I’ve always been on my own path. That’s where the good stuff is.

Nominated…

As you know, a year ago, I took on a contract with Heriot-Watt University as Community Engagement and Events Coordinator, which I do on a part-time basis. It’s creative, insightful & rewarding work, and the team I’m surrounded by are supportive and lovely.

Recently, I was nominated by my line manager, Monika Gopal for the Heriot-Watt University 'Celebrating our Values in Action - Inspire - Individual Award' award as part of our Celebrating our People Awards 2025.

I thought I’d document that somewhere (not quite sure why I didn’t win ha ha)

“Lauren Jamieson is a shining example of the ‘Inspire’ value in action at Heriot-Watt University. Through her dedication, creativity, and unwavering commitment to enhancing the experience of both students and staff, Lauren consistently goes above and beyond her role to inspire those around her. Based at the Scottish Borders campus, Lauren has made her role focused on enhancing both the staff and student experience as well as building strong relationships with the local community. What truly sets Lauren apart is her ability to make this role her own, delivering impactful events, forging connections with local businesses and community ventures, and ensuring that all events and opportunities are communicated effectively to the University community. Her ability to make the most of available resources demonstrate the breadth of her passion and innovation. One of the most notable examples of Lauren’s inspiring leadership was the Christmas Sustainability Market that she delivered during Sustainability Week in November. Lauren not only coordinated the event but also aligned it with the University’s Open Day, ensuring prospective students could engage with the initiative as well. This thoughtful planning maximised the impact of the event, providing a meaningful experience to both current and potential students while supporting the University’s sustainability goals. This initiative demonstrated Lauren’s knack for identifying opportunities that benefit the University in multiple ways. The Christmas Sustainability Market was based on the Heartland Market that Lauren organises in her personal time. This monthly community market is usually in Galashiels, but Lauren brought it to campus on this occasion. Securing over 10 local businesses and hosting the event across two large rooms at the Jean Muir Student Village, she also brought in a food truck to add to the vibrant atmosphere. The event, which ran from 2-6pm—well beyond her usual working hours—attracted 120 students, 30 staff, and 70 members of the community, making it one of the most well-attended social events at the campus, surpassing even some Welcome Week events in terms of attendance. What made this event even more special was the inclusion of both staff and students, an effort that reflects Lauren’s determination to break down silos and foster a sense of community. Her positive, friendly attitude throughout the event, as well as her hands-on approach in managing every aspect—from organising to running her own stall—demonstrates her tireless commitment to delivering high-quality experiences. Lauren’s ability to deliver such a high-impact event while working part-time is a testament to her work ethic and passion for the University and its community. The way she seamlessly integrates her personal interests, such as the market, with her professional role shows how she brings a unique and inspiring perspective to everything she does. Her creativity, organisational ability, and genuine desire to enhance the student and staff experience have made her an invaluable asset to Heriot-Watt University. Lauren’s work consistently demonstrates the values of Heriot-Watt University, particularly the ‘Inspire’ value. She not only generates brilliant ideas but also works tirelessly to turn them into tangible outcomes that positively impact the University community. Her inspiring leadership and dedication to her work make her an exceptional role model for colleagues and students alike. For her commitment to enhancing the student and staff experience, fostering community engagement, and delivering inspiring initiatives with energy and passion, Lauren Jamieson is a truly deserving candidate for the Celebrating Our Values in Action Award. ”

Reflections from Galashiels: Growing, Giving Back, and Celebrating Our Community

I’ve just come off the back of some big moments with the Colourful Edit. They’ve made me pause and reflect on the ways I’ve grown, the places I’ve explored, and, most importantly, where I’ve chosen to plant and water my roots: right here in Galashiels, in the heart of the Scottish Borders.

Putting yourself out there isn’t always easy. Like many who’ve tried to do something a little different or give back to their community, I’ve faced my share of criticism. When you’re volunteering your time and energy, it can sometimes feel like a thankless task. But here’s what keeps me going: I genuinely believe in the power of community, and I believe in this town.

As someone who grew up in Galashiels, now running my own business, looking to engage the student community, raise up creative talent with our Heartland Market and now serving as a director on the town’s Business Improvement District (BID), I want to be clear. This isn’t about telling people what they should do. It’s about gently shining a light on what’s already here and reminding each other that community still matters.

Right now, more than ever, we’re living through a time when loneliness and poor mental health are quietly impacting so many. But if we choose to look for the good, we’ll find it. Galashiels is full of it. There’s so much to be proud of. And if something could be better, maybe we can be part of the solution instead of just adding to the noise.

Growing up here, there was a real sense of connection. And as the world spins faster and becomes more digital, I think we need to work harder to keep that spirit alive. Say hello to someone you pass on the street. Check in on a neighbour. Take the kids out for a walk and notice the changing seasons. These small things matter, and they add up.

I don’t claim to have it all figured out. None of us does. But I do believe this: the grass is greener where you choose to water it. And Galashiels? It’s full of good people, great places, and huge potential. Let’s keep nurturing that. Together.

To help showcase what Galashiels has to offer, especially for visiting clients, students and friends from across the UK who are always taken aback by the charm of the Borders, I’ve started putting together a guide. It’s a growing, evolving list of local gems and experiences, aimed at both visitors and locals alike.
(If I’ve missed your business or industry, please don’t hesitate to get in touch, as I’d love to include you.)

Celebrating Style & Sisterhood

Kelso Races, Ladies Day 2025

This Sunday, I’ll be swapping my usual ‘mum hat’ for something a wee bit more glamorous, as I head off to a day at Kelso Races!

I’m delighted to be working with Jonathan and Sherri, and all the friendly team at Kelso, again, hosting the Colourful Edit Catwalk, where we’ll be on the lookout for our very own Queen of Style and let me tell you, the crown comes with a cracker of a prize.

Our winning Queen will walk away with £1200 worth of gift vouchers, thanks to some incredible women-led businesses, all absolute gems in their own right. I’m endlessly grateful for their generosity, and truly, they’re all Queens to me.

Here’s a look at the wonderful businesses making it all possible:

HAY Wellbeing
At HAY, it all starts with a heartfelt How Are You? This phrase lies at the core of everything they do. HAY is creating a warm, welcoming space where mental health and wellbeing are a priority - no stigma, just genuine support. A beautiful initiative born from a shared need to care more deeply and kindly for each other, Caroline and Gillian are simply wonderful. Gillian will be on the Mic on the catwalk too (Did I ever tell you she used to tour Europe with her band?)

Vintage Besoms
Step into a world of charm and nostalgia with Vintage Besoms. Run by the lovely mother and daughter duo, Grace & Angela, this Galashiels gem is packed with gorgeous vintage treasures, from your granny’s ornaments to stylish pre-loved clothes, mid-century furniture, and one-of-a-kind decorative pieces. It’s all about sustainability, history, and a lot of heart.

INIS
Inspired by the breathtaking beauty of Scotland’s landscapes, INIS offers a stunning collection of comfortable, stylish clothing. Their handpicked pieces blend international flair with homegrown charm, featuring favourites like Part Two, Ilse Jacobsen, Seasalt, and White Stuff. It’s all about quality, comfort, and a splash of something special for every woman.

Thirty Five
Based in Jedburgh, Thirty Five is the vision of the ever-lovely Melissa, who opened her boutique in 2022 to offer a truly personal shopping experience. With beautiful ladieswear, accessories, and thoughtful gifts, the boutique is a welcoming space where fashion meets comfort and style. Whether you’re after a new dress or a scented candle, Melissa’s got you covered – with a smile and a chat, of course.

Kitty & Gus
The endlessly creative Rachel is the powerhouse behind Kitty & Gus. With a passion for interiors, fabrics, fashion, and all things beautifully made, she juggles her shop, studio, website, and events – all while making curtains that dreams are made of! Her shop is a love letter to style, creativity, and good old-fashioned hard work.

As well as the Queen of Style, we’ll be on the lookout for the Dapper Chap with the exceptional Rachel from Humes, who’s offering the winner a bespoke Hume’s suit, and the best-dressed couple who will be put up for a delicious stay at the Schloss Roxburghe. We also have the talented Kayleigh Rose on the Decks in the Marquee. So get on your dancing shoes gals! Legendary!

So, whether you’re joining us on the day or cheering from your couch with a cuppa, know that it’s more than just a catwalk - it’s a celebration of style, community, and the brilliant women making waves in the Scottish Borders and beyond.

Can’t wait to see some glam, some glitter, and plenty of grins (or gins!).

Hope to see you there!

TCE Colourful Brunches

Last Sunday, I had the absolute pleasure of hosting my TCE May Collective over at my lovely friend Barbara’s home… just a wee hop, skip and a jump from mine! We had a brilliant group of eight ladies booked in, and it turned into such a gorgeous day, all about colour and confidence.

The morning kicked off at 10am with a warm welcome and a wee drink to get settled. By 10:15, we were diving into a relaxed session all about understanding colour and how to dress in a way that brings out your best self. We also had a lovely chat about the ladies’ clothes, looking at what’s working and where a little tweak could make all the difference. How to wear black and wear your best metallics and lip shades.

We got into the individual mini colour analysis sessions where each guest had around 20 minutes with me to explore their colours, receive a personalised digital seasonal swatch, and of course, capture that magic moment with a photo of their wow colours. Whilst the rest had brunch and chats.

We finished up around 2pm with a chance for last questions and swatch ordering.

The session is £50 per person, with the option to add on:
A physical seasonal swatch for £30
A physical sub-season swatch for £40
Any travel outwith a 5-mile radius.

It was a lovely day filled with laughter, learning and plenty of colour joy – just the kind of Sunday I love.

If you would like to host a session, I’m happy to travel with my gorgeous assistant Joanne.

PS - Barbara hosted the event and provided the food goods…

Ladies Day at Kelso Racecourse

This Sunday, I’m gearing up for my fifth year judging the style at Kelso Races Ladies Day, and I can’t wait! Once again, we’re keeping an eye out for those wee thoughtful touches that show a bit of care for the planet. Maybe it’s a pre-loved frock, a vintage headpiece, or something handed down with a bit of history, whatever it is, we love hearing the stories behind the outfits. That’s where people’s personalities really shine through, and that means a lot to us as judges.

For me, dressing up should feel joyful, like a proper treat. And if your outfit’s also helped support a local business or made a gentler mark on the planet, well, that’s even better. It’s always such a lovely day out, and the team at Kelso are just brilliant.

Now, it might sound all glitz and glamour judging the best dressed… but believe me, there’s a fair bit to juggle with timings, categories, outfits and prizes! Still, we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Now I just need to sort my own outfit out!

Struggling with your personal style…

Well, here I am to help you! I have been working as a personal stylist for 12 years, but really I think I’ve been doing it all my life! My favourite thing to do as a young girl, was watch fashion TV and buy ‘Vogue’. Something about the colours and the way things were shot just spoke to my soul.

I have been busy lately with Colour Analysis in my studio, wardrobe edits and wedding styling for MOTB/MOTG and a beautiful bride. I worked as a Bridal Stylist over in Australia, and the importance of a colour palette is something I pride myself on for the bridal party.

I’ve been thinking about Spring and how I can help you with you. Personal style to me is an extension of your personality and how you want to communicate to people. It’s the first impression that counts, but my styling services are more about building the ‘story of you’, so you know inside out, how to understand your colour palette (and the psychology behind it), your body shape, which leads to wardrobe and why you picked that beautiful shade of yellow, cut on the bias, dress.

Here are a few tips - please let me know if these resonate with you.

Figure out your Colour Palette: Many of my styling clients are unsure which colours complement their skin tone, hair colour, and eye colour. This often leads to confusion over what to wear and can result in a wardrobe filled with pieces that don’t enhance their features. My services in Colour Analysis are a good place to start your journey, if even just for figuring out your wardrobe neutrals, metalic/jewellery choices and a few wow colours. This week, I’ve had two different conversations around ‘black’ and how both ladies wore it. One wore it to ‘cover up’, the other wore it as her ‘style’. The lady who was using the black as a cover up, was taken through personal analysis with me, and we discovered so many other colours that made her look radiant, and how to work these new found colours into her lifestyle. The other lady was almost double checking with me, that it was ok to wear black and I added in that ‘yes, it’s your colour and brand style’ which is very ‘chic’, but perhaps look at adding metalics or accessories that can add a pop of colour, such as a bright lip or bag. Make up trends this year, are all about finding your ‘season’, and I also offer advice on what to wear on your face when we do the analysis. For example, my Winter clients can really carry the drama of make up, where as a Summer clients may feel over-powered.

Body Shape Confusion: Many of my clients struggle to identify their body shape and understand how to dress it effectively, leading to feelings of insecurity and frustration when trying to find clothing that fits well and flatters their figure. Especially when everything in the shops is tailored toward a tall size eight. MOST of my clients don’t actually have a full sized mirror to indulge looking at their gorgeous curves and identify their key assets. Normally I would place my client in front of my mirror and make a few gentle suggestions on how what styles, cuts and fabrics would work best. I don’t call you by fruits, so please don’t worry!

Wardrobe Overload: Have you ever heard that statement, ‘I have nothing to wear’, despite having a full wardrobe of clothes. Clutter anywhere, can create stress and indecision (don’t I know it as a mum of three!), so you are best placed to start cleansing the rails, with help from your own personal stylist! It’s probably one of my favourite things to do - I am fair, but firm. Most of the time, I take a wardrobe, then create 30 new outfits from the existing collections. It’s a skill and definitely an investment. Sometimes it just comes down to having a trained professional, to boost your confidence and help you ‘look outside the norm’ and add in a few ‘trending pieces’ for your wardrobe to feel ‘refreshed.

How Spring 2025 Trends Transform into Perfect Racewear

Sunday, May 25th, marks a special milestone for me as I celebrate my 5th anniversary helping Kelso Racecourse, known as Britain’s friendliest racecourse, with their Annual Ladies Day Event. This year, we’re excited to bring back the Colourful Edit Catwalk featuring an all-female lineup of hosts, ensuring a safe, stylish, and confident atmosphere as we celebrate the art of racing fashion.

Tips for a Stylish Race Day:

Sunday, May 25th, marks a special milestone for me as I celebrate my 5th anniversary helping Kelso Racecourse, known as Britain’s friendliest racecourse, with their Annual Ladies Day Event. This year, we’re excited to bring back the Colourful Edit Catwalk featuring an all-female lineup of hosts, ensuring a safe, stylish, and confident atmosphere as we celebrate the art of racing fashion.

During the event, attendees will have the chance to be spotted, for coveted titles such as ‘Queen of Style,’ ‘Best Dressed Male,’ and ‘Best Dressed Couple.’ In keeping with our commitment to sustainable fashion, we’ve decided to merge the ‘Queen of Style’ category with ‘Best Dressed Vintage.’ This blend not only highlights the importance of sustainability in our fashion choices but also allows attendees to showcase their unique style through vintage finds.

Join us for a day filled with excitement, elegance, and eco-consciousness as we play our part in redefining race day fashion!

Petal Pink: A Soft and Feminine Touch

Pink is the colour of the season, making it a perfect choice for race day. A tailored petal pink suit can make a bold statement while remaining sophisticated. Alternatively, a petal pink midi dress with ruffles and a cinched waist can enhance your silhouette beautifully. Complete the look with nude heels and delicate gold/silver jewellery for an effortlessly feminine vibe.

Bohemian Dreams: Effortlessly Chic for the Races

The bohemian aesthetic is all about flowing fabrics and free-spirited silhouettes. For race day, consider a maxi dress adorned with floral patterns or lace details. Pair it with a wide-brimmed hat and oversized sunglasses to create a laid-back yet elegant look. Opt for comfortable, strappy sandals to ensure you can walk around the venue with ease. Add a statement clutch made from natural materials to keep your essentials stylishly contained.

Pistachio is Popping: Fresh Accents to Brighten Your Outfit

Incorporate pops of pistachio into your racewear for a refreshing touch. Consider a pistachio-coloured dress or a statement top paired with neutral bottoms. If you prefer a more understated approach, opt for pistachio accessories like a belt, handbag, or shoes that can elevate an otherwise simple outfit. This trendy colour is sure to make you stand out in a sea of traditional racewear.

Slim-Cut: Tailored for Elegance

Slim-cut trousers are back (did they ever go away?) and can be a great alternative to dresses on race day. Pair them with a luxurious blouse or a structured blazer for a sleek and polished outfit. Choose high-waisted styles to elongate your legs, and don’t forget to wear chic heels to elevate your look. A clutch in a contrasting color can add a pop of interest while keeping your essentials stylish.

Accessorise Irresponsibly: Make a Statement

I am LOVING this trend (clearly!) Race day is the perfect opportunity to embrace excessive accessorisation. Layer statement necklaces, wear oversized earrings, or add a collection of bangles to your outfit. Consider vintage or handmade pieces from local artisans (hello) to give your look a unique twist. Don’t forget a stylish hat or fascinator to complete your ensemble; they’re practically a race day requirement!

Prep School Revival: Classic with a Modern Twist

The prep school trend can be adapted beautifully for race day. A tailored blazer over a crisp, white shirt paired with a pleated midi skirt can create a sophisticated yet youthful look. The new workwear trend can be translated into stylish race day attire by suiting and booting your outfit, you could even add a tie into the mix. We saw a few vintage numbers last year which were classy and elegant. Opt for loafers or chic ankle boots for footwear, and accessorise with a structured handbag and a silk scarf for a touch of elegance.

Coastal Cool: Breezy Vibes for Race Day

Channeling coastal cool is ideal for a sunny race day. Although, I’m not sure you would class Scotland as the sunshine capital! Think light linen trousers paired with a breezy, oversized shirt or a stylish jumpsuit in soft, beachy colors. Add a straw tote and espadrilles to complete the laid-back look. A pair of aviator sunglasses can provide that perfect finishing touch while keeping you shielded from the sun

Belfast Birthday with my Boy

A day trip to Belfast is also a great option. You can easily fit in an open-top bus tour to learn about the city’s history, which we did on Saturday. Plus, we enjoyed sampling the local food and, of course, chasing Pokemon along the way!

Last weekend, I had a lovely trip to Belfast with my son.

For his birthday last year, he expressed an interest in visiting Ireland, especially after learning about the Titanic in school. As a family, we decided to prioritise spending quality time together, so when the chance came up, I booked our tickets, and off we went!

If you’re considering a visit to the Titanic exhibition, I highly recommend it. We spent a couple of hours exploring it and we took part in the family quiz to keep things engaging for Mac. To add to the fun, I surprised him with a stay at the Titanic Hotel nearby, and his reaction was priceless. It’s moments like these that create lasting memories, reminding us that life is too short not to travel and enjoy together.

If you were thinking about going, a day trip to Belfast is also a great option. You can easily fit in the Titanic tour, and we did the open-top bus tour to learn about the city’s history, on Saturday. Plus, we enjoyed sampling the local food and, of course, chasing Pokemon along the way!

Let’s embrace Blue Monday…

Blue Monday, often called the most depressing day of the year, can be an opportunity to transform your mood through fashion. As a stylist, the colours we wear significantly influence our emotions and mental state.

Blue Monday, often called the most depressing day of the year, can be an opportunity to transform your mood through fashion. As a stylist, the colours we wear significantly influence our emotions and mental state.

Blue happens to be my favourite colour and in particular, is known for its calming and soothing qualities, making it an excellent choice for this day. Here are some friendly tips on how to dress positively:

  1. Choose Shades of Blue: Incorporate different shades of blue into your wardrobe, whether it’s a soft sky blue for a Summer palette, a deeper navy for a Winter palette, Marine navy or teal for Autumn or a little bit of French navy or bright turquoise for my Spring gals and boys… These colours can evoke feelings of tranquillity and stability.

  2. Accessorise Wisely: Does anyone have any accessories? Hmm. Use blue accessories like my ‘edits’, scarves, bags, or jewellery to add a pop of colour without overwhelming your outfit, accessories can be great conversation starters and can uplift your spirits. Opt for warm blue accessories like knitted hats, gloves, or scarves. Not only will they add a pop of colour, but they’ll also keep you snug.

  3. Layer with Neutrals: Given the unpredictable Scottish weather, layering is key. Combine blue with neutral colours like white, grey, or beige to create a harmonious outfit. This balance can enhance the calming effect of blue while keeping your look chic.

  4. Incorporate Positive Affirmations: Wear clothing with positive messages or quotes in blue tones. This not only boosts your confidence but also reflects your positive mindset.

As we live in Scotland, and it’s predictably cold in January, If you have nothing blue in your wardrobe… let’s then look at fabrics. By dressing mindfully, you can significantly impact your mood and the way you experience the day.

  1. Wool: This classic fabric is excellent for insulation. Merino wool is particularly soft and breathable, making it perfect for layering.

  2. Cashmere: Luxurious and incredibly warm, cashmere jumpers or scarves add a touch of elegance while keeping you cosy.

  3. Fleece: Lightweight yet warm, fleece is perfect for outer layers. It’s soft against the skin and great for keeping the chill at bay.

  4. Tweed: A quintessential Scottish fabric, tweed is both rugged and stylish. It’s perfect for jackets and coats, providing warmth and character.

My other top tips would be to meet up with friends for a walk, do some lovely crafting with the kids or make yourself something yummy to eat.

Hope this helps - if you would like to share any accessories images with me, that would be super!

THE COLOURFUL EDIT COLLECTIVE

The Journey of The Colourful Edit Collective

As I approached my birthday in January, I found myself reflecting on the chaos of everyday life. Like many of us, I often felt overwhelmed with responsibilities, leaving little room for creativity and connection. This year, I wanted to do something different - something that would not only celebrate my birthday but also bring together a community of inspiring women who share a passion for expression, creativity and connection. Thus, the idea for the 'January Birthday Club' was born.

The concept was simple: gather a group of friends for a couple of hours to escape the daily grind and indulge in some creative fun. However, as I began to brainstorm, I realised that this wasn't just about my birthday. It was about creating a space where women could come together each month, share ideas, and support one another in their journeys. The more I contemplated this vision, the clearer it became that it was evolving into something much larger.

With that, The Colourful Edit Collective was born - a monthly celebration of creativity, community, and connection. Each gathering would feature a different theme, activity, or workshop, allowing participants to explore their artistic sides while building meaningful relationships. I envisioned a vibrant community where women could inspire one another, collaborate on projects, and create lasting friendships.

As I share this journey with you, I invite you to join me in this exciting venture. Whether you're a local artist, teacher, SAHM, interested in fashion styling, a creative enthusiast, or simply someone looking to connect with like-minded women, The Colourful Edit Collective is a space for you. Together, we can embrace the beauty of creativity, style and the power of community, one colourful event at a time.

I'm thrilled to embark on this journey, and I can't wait to see how The Colourful Edit Collective unfolds - starting with January (my favourite month!).

Golden (or Silver) Globes

Looking at colour, style and glowing actresses…

I thought I’d add my tuppence worth in for the sake of having a little bit of colour and style to look at in January! How lovely to see people getting dressed up, whilst we are all sat here post mince pies and sticky toffee puddings! I mean, do these celebs ‘really’ get to enjoy Christmas … with the knowledge of an upcoming appearance? My answer would be… ‘yes’!, I’m sure they do. I’m sure they are fully body confident and if they aren’t, they can at least act like they are! Lights, camera, action and all that…

So my feelings on judging people are always the same every year. I don’t like to ‘judge’. Who am I to comment on how a look has come together? I completely stand by ‘personal style’ and embrace confidence and creativity at the forefront! That said, I can pick a colour and comment on whether it’s perhaps the correct shade against a skin tone. It’s part of my job as a stylist specialising in colour to get this right. So I thought I’d simply try to show you the ‘rights and wrongs’ when it comes to picking your gown, jewellery, make-up and hair.

Here are my thoughts;

  1. I noted that ALL the celebrities were opting for Silver Jewellery. Even the warm skin tones. I like this though. it’s fresh and fun to play around with your accessories and good for me, STATEMENT pieces are a key trend for 2025.

  2. There were a lot of ‘Grace Kelly’ style hairstyles and silhouettes which I adore. Zendaya and Selena in particular.

  3. When you get your colour right - you shine brighter. It lifts your face shape, frame and posture, putting you at the forefront, not the dress.

  4. If you are going for a silver or gold gown, try to ensure it’s complementary to your skin tone. Cool (silver), Warm (gold). See, for example, Nicole and Demi. I’d of swapped their gowns. Nicole is a Spring and Demi a Winter.

  5. Also lots of Kate Middleton/Ailsa from Frozen Gloves are on the go. Not sure how I feel about these.

Some of my favourite looks from the night… based on the colour and style of the gown.

Some of my favourites down here, but I’ve popped in another look where I see them shining, rather than the Globes look. For the following reasons;
Angelina - I feel like her hair is too warm at the moment for her cool season. I think she’s a cool summer, not quite a winter.
Kerry - I think being petite, this is all a little overpowering, but especially the make-up. I think less is more and fresh over too made up.
Keira - I love Black Doves, but just not for her to be in black too much. I love her when she does the monochromatic androgynous dressing, but I think she’s more of a warm undertone… potentially autumn.
Mikey - my preference is silver. The gold is overpowering her IMO.

But again - it’s tricky with lights, camera and make-up - that’s why you need a person-to-person visit!

Create your 2025 palette…

What colours shall you be wearing this season?

Hello Ladies and Gents,

A warm/cool welcome to 2025 from your resident stylist. I hope you have all made the latter part of 2024 what it needed to be.

As we approach the turn of the season, you may be wondering what to do with yourself, or more so, your style. What’s coming, what are we wearing, what’s in, what’s out? If you know me by now, you know that first things first when it comes to shopping habits… start with your wardrobe! It's the most sustainable way, and it’s amazing to see what you may have tucked away!

As we know, the powers that be, Pantone have set the ‘tone’ for the year, called Mocha Mouse. For me, it’s a silky shade of Hot Chocolate. But depending on how you take yours, you can adapt to this current trend by dialling the amount of ‘hot chocolate’ to ‘milk’ ratio. Then whether you add to it, cinnamon, brown sugar, hot water or white marshmallows…

Seasonal shades - which are you? I need to stop with the tasty sugary drink options I know!

NOTE: The Season’s neutrals are featured on the baseline. You will find at least one in your palette. With key SS25 colours above. Then above this, I have identified my ‘Colourful Edit’ swatches into relevant colours - because that’s who I am :)
Can you spot your season? Are there colours that you like? I do hope so! You can always come in for a try!

I’ve had a nice play in my studio on Sunday, looking at the incoming palettes… I was a little worried that we were going to ‘beige’, but alas, Pantone has turned it around into something rather unique and colourful. I thought it would be helpful to my lovely clients to organise your shades of the season (swathes are in the background of the image), so you can start to be ‘ahead of the colour game’ and then furthermore give you some styling your palette inspiration (forefront).

I know, I know. Good isn’t it? Your local colour guru, in good old Galashiels!

I do hope you find some inspiration here, and if you do, could you send me a picture, or tag me in the socials? And of course, if you need some help in the area of colour and style, I happen to be rather experienced in my field. So I would be delighted to assist. Here’s a link to my services.

I’m off to look out my Spring Summer colours and get a head start on this game…

Any questions, you can email me: Lauren@thecolourfuledit.com

Lot’s of Love,
Lauren xx

Back to the mothership…

Taking my accessories back to my home studio is my plan for 2025. More creative control and more customer interaction.

I have some news… it’s a bit of a read…

My accessories will be celebrating their tenth anniversary next year! It's hard to believe how time flies. As a long-time enthusiast of statement accessories, I have a special story behind the collection for those of you who don’t already know. When my child was a toddler, she accidentally pulled down my favourite set of beads. Watching them scatter across the floor sparked an idea: I needed a baby-friendly piece that not only made a statement but also complemented my colour palette and jazzed up a white tee and jeans combo.

What began as a creative project on the kitchen table with a baby and toddler has evolved into significant growth, valuable learnings, and thousands of sales. My work has gained recognition in various magazines, including Trinny’s Elevator Pitch, Top Drawer, as well as at Retail Fairs and Trade Fairs. Prior to launching this collection, my professional background was in advertising, business, styling and photography, but I had never delved into retail and wholesale before.

While I thoroughly enjoy engaging directly with my clients, navigating the wholesale landscape has presented its own unique challenges. For the past few years, I felt I have been more of a passenger in this journey, despite forming incredible connections and expanding my reach. However, I realised that my brand truly flourishes when I can interact with clients personally, sharing my passion and expertise first-hand.

As I look ahead to 2025, I've made the decision to transition back to a more direct-to-consumer model, connecting directly with my audience through pop-up events and my online store. I have already established a wonderful customer base across the UK, and my new focus will be on expanding my colourful community. This shift will allow me the time to explore where my audience gathers and get creative with new product developments for 2025, which I am very excited about!

I hope you can understand my decision, and I look forward to you and I working together to spread The Colourful Edit brand even further!

Winter Warming Coats

Now whilst I see the practicality in this, for keeping cosy, the school run, walking the dog, I just don’t see how else this would make you feel your best - unless of course you are a Winter palette or can carry of the black colour. Tyme Away

Time away in Tynemouth

Cullercoats.

We had a lovely short and sunny October break in Tynemouth. I booked it all a little last minute, as time has really snuck up on me this year. I thought I’d start writing about our little ticky tours because I felt inspired, and it may inspire you to take a Sunday jaunt to explore for yourself!

We stayed a couple of streets back from the beach, and on our first evening there, we had the Hunters Moon to witness. The kids just loved being on Longsands Beach. They don’t seem to pay attention to the time of year; you can find us up to our knees in water and sand at any given moment! The next morning, I wanted to catch the sunrise, so I took little Brisbane down for a long walk, and he met so many friends on the beach. It was beautiful just to hear the waves and watch the sunrise—my happy place.

The kids enjoyed scooting along the flat bike lanes, and we spent most of our time back on the beach. The girls and I went to Cullercoats and participated in a wild swim. We can confirm that it was freezing, but we made up for it with cozy hot chocolates and pastries! (Clearly, life revolves around food!). Cullercoats was the perfect setting for a sea dip, and I took myself the next day for a ‘chill,’ quite literally! I would never normally go on my own, but there were lots of groups nearby, which made me feel more secure in case of any dramas.

Mum and Dad had recommended Tynemouth Market, which turned out to be a lovely little day on Saturday. It’s been voted the best market in the UK, according to my friend from whom I bought some art. I have to say it was quite nice to walk around a market and not have to worry about setting it all up for a change. There was a mix of bric-a-brac, vintage items, artists, and some artisan makers present on Saturday, with more expected to come on Sunday. The food market was great too, and I had a delicious vegan shawarma.

The high street was filled with charming little shops, restaurants, and eateries. We try (we really do) to have just one meal out, as my kids literally eat adult portions, and as you can imagine, the prices start to add up!

It was refreshing to take this break. This year seems to have flown by faster than any other on record. It reminded me that coastal life is only an hour or so away, so I can stop dreaming about Australia and New Zealand and take off for some UK sunrises with my gorgeous wee tribe on occasion. And actually, the weather is the most fun part for us!

The Colourful Edit X Jigsaw

Delighted to have been asked to collaborate with Jigsaw Edinburgh - such an awesome brand and supportive team.

We welcomed a beautiful group of ladies, all eager to hear about how ‘colour’ can make a difference in the way we present in our day to day life.

After a client demo session, explaining the seasonal approach, I delved into how we can ‘bend some rules’ and have fun with colour. My trusty @thecolourfuledit wheel was very much a talking point and showing how this can be used to create your very own spin on personal style. Along with some mood-boards with Jigsaws AW selects. Using triadic colours, analogous colours, split complimentary and combining classics with a twist.

I always love chatting about my passion for colour, why we feel good in certain hues, why we resonate with a certain palette, the personality of your palettes and how we can boost our confidence, not just through colours, but our individual style and personal brand.

We all deserve to feel special, so thank you to everyone who came, coloured in with us, and thank you to Rebecca and team for such a warm welcome to @thecolourfuledit

Here are a few snaps from our colour and styling evening at @insidejigsaw George Street, Edinburgh.

Until the next time…

Lauren x
